Budleigh Salterton - Wildlife garden
We were asked to create a wild pond to be positioned in the lowest part of the garden, adjacent to woodland giving it an inherent natural feel. The tricky part was that two sides of the pond were close to a steep ‘drop off’ which meant that manoeuvring machinery required great care and skill.
It was a large pond and the liner was cumbersome and required extra ‘muscle’ to position it smoothly.Clay was imported to hide the liner and to create a planting medium. Penny, our designer, was on hand when the excavation and shaping took place, marginal shelves were created along with a ‘beach’ to enable animals to enter and exit. Jerry, who has been with the company for more than 20 years, led our experienced team throughout the whole process.
The finished product was a great success. The ecology and depth of the pond meant that the water cleared quickly despite no pump and filter being used. Seeded grass paths were created so that you could walk around the pond and be led to it from the top of the garden. Wild flower areas and timber steps were added to enhance the natural feel.
